Start Me Up
the web’s most interesting knickknacks that you might have missed
I’m a podcast devotee and to subscribe to about 60 podcasts using my favourite player, Overcast. I devour every episode at 3x playback and listen anywhere and everywhere. I’m particularly fond of interview shows and love being a fly on the wall for long, intimate chats.
Having founded a few startups myself, I take a lot of inspiration listening to the war stories of startup founders. Today’s newsletter features a collection of podcast interviews with inspirational startups based here in South Africa.
SweepSouth’s founder, Aisha Pandor, on Mixergy - SweepSouth is a cleaning service company that connects clients to on-demand domestic cleaners via an online booking platform. They have raised $5m over 5 investment rounds.
Investec co-founder, Stephen Koseff, on CliffCentral - Gareth chats to Stephen about his 40 years at the helm of Investec, the global specialist bank and asset management company.
The Story of USN on Making SMEs Matter - One of South Africa’s most underappreciated companies, USN has become a power house on the global sports nutrition stage. I loved this chat.
Takealot CEO Kim Reid on the TechCentral Podcast - Takealot.com CEO Kim Reid chats to Duncan McLeod about the past, present and future of South Africa's biggest online retailer.
MXit’s founder, Herman Heunis, on Mixergy. - MXit was South Africa’s first mobile instant messenger of its kind and was used by over 18 million users in 120+ countries.
PS: Comments are now open for all readers. I’d love to hear about your favourite South African startups.
